Why Piano Lessons?
Most of us want to express ourselves in other ways that words. Music has been around for countless years, and is an integral part of our humanity. When we play music, we are being creative, and we feel fulfilled. Piano lessons give children and adults boundless ways to express themselves.

Piano lessons boost an individual’s development, help develop the ability to think faster, and impart a heightened sense of concentration. Lessons encourage use of both sides of the brain simultaneously, creative as well as calculative intelligence, and increase one’s effectiveness in life. One of the most profound results of taking piano lessons for adults and children is acquiring this special kind of intense focus. Learning to play piano is gift that a student will always have. It’s a source of fun, and an opportunity to learn something new. Playing piano and keyboard can be just for one’s self, or for playing music with others. It can be a springboard to other musical endeavors.

What Makes a Good Piano Teacher?
Finding a good teacher can take time. The right teacher for you or your child can make all the difference in the world. Many piano teachers are too rigid in their teaching methods. They have a set curriculum, not taking into account the requirements for each unique student.

Each student, at any age, has individual interests and preferences. As lessons progress over time, a good teacher will spend a significant amount of time learning what those are. A good teacher will include the student in these decisions. Enable a student to be part of the learning process, and that student will improve tremendously.

A good piano and keyboard teacher will not only transfer knowledge, but motivate, generate, excite and inspire his students. A piano teacher will challenge his students and provide support and encouragement. One-on-one individual classes allow the teacher to give all the personal attention that students require. Group lessons can’t provide this, and will only slow down a student’s progress and will be frustrating.

A teacher should judge a student’s progress by his or her’s own effort and rate of improvement, never in relation, or by comparison to others, or to any organization’s standards. If lessons are fun, students will learn quickly. A good teacher is patient and will make learning to play the piano a unique and rewarding experience for each student.

“I’m an adult beginner and so happy with my teacher. He’s very supportive and encouraging. A great teacher and so patient. I don’t even get nervous playing because he makes the lessons light and easygoing. I not only learn to read music, classical, popular, and new age, but am now learning Blues improvisation. I am having a really fun experience”‎ – Una Danson
“Fabulous piano teacher, lessons fun, excellent progress. We looked around and decided this was the best teacher in Portland for our son. He is patient, supportive, and makes the lessons an adventure and fun. My son always leaves energized about music. He loves going to the studio for his lessons. Tom is proud of the effort he's made and the songs he can play well.

His lessons are exciting and inspiring. He learns to play by ear, and makes soundtracks with all kinds of instruments, just like in a professional recording studio. He’s getting a complete music education. I am completely happy with the piano lessons and our teacher.” – T. S. Morris
“I’m an adult beginner and having a great time with piano lessons. The lessons are total fun and I find the whole process of learning to play music so interesting. I’ve been doing lessons about 2 1/2 years, and when I started, could not play a note. I’m now playing pieces by Bach, Enya, Beetles, Billy Joel. Besides reading music, I’m learning to play by ear and do some improv. My teacher makes the lessons intriguing. He knows just how much to challenge me. There's nothing I enjoy more. I just love playing”
– G. Gibbons
“My kids are learning quickly with their teacher. They really love taking lessons. They started as complete beginners, but have quickly learned to play and have accomplished a lot. Their teacher is very patient, experienced, and explains things well.

My son and daughter get lots of encouragement, and consequently, work hard because they are motivated by their teacher to learn. They’re playing all kinds of music, classical, blues, pop. They even get to compose their own pieces and record them. I’m so happy with their piano lessons.‎”
– Fran D.

Each Student is Unique
Discovering what interests and excites each student is the key to teaching that individual student. Some students are interested only in learning to read music, and their preferences for classical, popular, blues, jazz, folk, or new age music will vary.

Others are interested in learning to play by ear. Some students are curious about the construct of music, and want to explore theory and harmony. Students may also wish to try Blues improvisation, styles to accompany voice, composing music, making videos to share with family, or learning to share music and jam with friends.

Confidence & Accomplishment
Learning to play piano or keyboard gives students a sense of accomplishment. As students progress, the complexity of playing yields to a sense of ease and understanding. Skills are quickly acquired; beginning students look back to only six months ago, surprised at their progress and new confidence.

Students often start lessons as beginners. It’s great working with beginner students because I can easily see their progress, and sense their joy in learning. Students that have had lessons before, or are self taught, will also find a new beginning for their music. There’s always something fresh to learn in music, whether it’s learning an undiscovered song, or arranging one with new chord voicings.

The Lessons
Lessons are held at a relaxed pace. Personalized lessons are the most effective way to learn rapidly. Playing music that appeals to you makes weekly lessons something to anticipate. I want students to have a great musical experience.

Having a piano or keyboard at home is fine for learning. What is important is for you to connect with music in a way that will provide a lifetime of satisfaction and joy.

Call me to discuss your interests. I’ll explain how I teach, and answer any questions you have about beginning piano lessons. I hope you enjoy this new experience.
